Meagan manages customer care and scheduling, ensuring every project runs smoothly. Together we treat every home like it’s our own, pledging no dust and no mess while we work.

Why regular chimney inspections matter

Chimney systems carry smoke, heat and gasses away from your home; neglecting them can lead to fires, carbon‑monoxide exposure or structural damage. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that all chimneys, fireplaces and vents be inspected at least once a year. Regular inspections and maintenance remove creosote deposits and confirm that the flue, cap, crown and masonry are in good condition. When done properly, inspections help:

  • Prevent fires and carbon‑monoxide hazards: The NFPA’s 211 standard emphasises that annual inspections are essential and that chimneys must be structurally sound, free of creosote and properly vented.
  • Detect moisture and structural issues: An inspection reviews the chimney cap, crown, flashing and masonry for cracks or water intrusion.
  • Ensure proper draft and efficiency: Technicians assess the firebox, smoke chamber and damper for heat stress or corrosion and examine the full length of the flue for cracks, creosote buildup, blockages and correct sizing. They also verify that appliances are venting safely and operating efficiently.
  • Maintain code compliance and insurance requirements: Many home insurers and local building codes require adherence to NFPA 211; regular inspections keep you compliant.

Levels of chimney inspection (NFPA 211)

The NFPA defines three levels of chimney inspection. We follow these standards to ensure your system is safe and compliant.

Level 1 – Basic annual inspection

A Level 1 inspection is a routine annual check when no system changes have occurred. It involves a visual examination of the readily accessible parts of the chimney to verify structural soundness, appliance connections and that there are no obstructions or combustible deposits. This inspection is recommended for chimneys under continued service with the same appliance and fuel.

Level 2 – Real‑estate transfers and system modifications

A Level 2 inspection is required when buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, severe weather event or when switching fuel types. It includes a Level 1 inspection plus a video scan of the flue and accessible areas such as attics, basements and crawlspaces. This level ensures that hidden cracks, liner damage or blockages are detected and that the flue is properly sized for the appliance. No demolition is necessary, but this inspection provides peace of mind for real‑estate transactions and major system changes.

Level 3 – Investigation of suspected hazards

A Level 3 inspection is performed when serious hazards are suspected and issues cannot be evaluated through Level 1 or Level 2 inspections. It may require partial disassembly of the chimney or surrounding structure to access concealed areas. Level 3 inspections are reserved for confirmed problems, such as structural failure or concealed fire damage, and focus on specific areas of concern.

Our thorough inspection process

Every inspection conducted by R. Horne Hearth & Home follows a systematic, step‑by‑step process to ensure nothing is overlooked:

  1. Exterior structural review: We examine the chimney cap, crown, flashing, masonry and roofline for damage, missing components or water intrusion.
  2. Interior and firebox assessment: We check the firebox, smoke chamber, damper and surrounding materials for heat stress, loose mortar, corrosion and proper clearances.
  3. Full‑length flue examination: Using specialized cameras, we inspect the entire flue for cracks, voids, creosote buildup and blockages and confirm that the flue size matches your appliance.
  4. Appliance and venting review: We evaluate wood, gas and pellet appliances for proper installation, safe venting, secure connections and correct draft performance.
  5. Reporting and recommendations: After the inspection, we provide clear documentation of our findings along with recommendations for cleaning, repairs or upgrades.

Our team uses drop cloths and high‑efficiency vacuums to protect your home. We stand by our promise: no dust, no mess.

When to schedule your chimney inspection

Regular inspections are the best way to avoid costly repairs and ensure safe operation. You should schedule a chimney inspection:

  • Annually – even if you don’t use your fireplace often.
  • Before buying or selling a property – to confirm the chimney is safe and up to code.
  • After a chimney fire or extreme weather event – to detect hidden damage.
  • When switching fuel types or making structural changes – to ensure the system is properly adapted.
